Equal parts new-wave and social commentary, Imamura's breakthrough film combines the standard gangster narrative with strong characters and inventive visuals. The usual new-wave tricks will alienate some, and resolution through symbolism will frustrate those expecting a typical third act, but this is recommended viewing for any fan of Japanese cinema
