Bridging the gap between Ozu, Mizoguchi and American cinema, Yamanaka's incredible use of mise-en-scène and ensemble narrative provides a refreshingly forward-thinking period drama, even if the female roles remain frozen in cliché. Full of ambition and talent, this film deserves to be listed alongside the all-time greats of Japanese cinema.
